Nord Stream 2: The heart of the Russia-West controversy amid the energy crisis 0
Russia and Germany say that Nord Stream 2 is `no more` than a commercial project, but in the midst of the energy crisis, many European parliamentarians strongly oppose this agreement due to concerns about dependence on Russia.

The world’s most controversial gas pipeline
Remote, quiet and rich in energy resources – the Lubmin coast in northern Germany is currently the site of the world’s most controversial gas pipeline.
The Nord Stream 2 project runs 1,200 km from Vyborg in Russia across the Baltic Sea to Lubmin in Germany, bypassing Ukraine and Poland.
According to Mr. Gustav Gressel – senior policy scholar at the European Council on Foreign Relations, it is only a matter of time before German authorities approve this pipeline.
`We want to get rid of dependence on Russia for energy,` Morten Petersen, a Danish parliamentarian in the European Parliament, told CNBC on October 15.
Nord Stream 2 has brought about different geopolitical meanings.
The majority of natural gas in Europe comes from Russia.
Poland and Ukraine also oppose the pipeline, citing energy security concerns.
However, supporters of the Nord Stream 2 project say that US opposition comes from the desire to sell liquefied natural gas to Europe and therefore, Washington sees this agreement as an obstacle.
As for President Putin and many parliamentarians in Germany, Nord Stream 2 is nothing more than a trade agreement.
Commenting with CNBC on October 13, President Putin affirmed that this project is `completely commercial` and is an effective way to supply natural gas to Europe.
Nord Stream 2 is a gas pipeline route to Europe that is shorter than the pipeline passing through Ukraine, and is also more modern and saves maintenance costs.
A document from the European Parliament said, `It is estimated that the cost of maintaining the gas pipeline through Ukraine costs from 2.5 to 12 billion USD, while the total replacement cost can be up to 17.8 billion USD.`

Europe’s difficult question
The debate over what to do with Nord Stream 2 has gained traction in recent weeks as energy prices soared in Europe.
Therefore, European leaders are under pressure to take measures to reduce this impact.
However, the EU is currently uncertain about what it needs to do.
The EU is working to become carbon neutral in the coming years and this raises questions about what kind of energy European countries will use then.
