Commander of the Ukrainian Army Oleksandr Pavliuk told The Times on May 2 that Russia’s goal in 2024 is to completely control Donetsk, Lugansk provinces and, if possible, Zaporizhzhia province.
Russia is said to be trying to gain control of as much territory as possible before the aid bill recently passed by the US can impact the war situation.
The Ukrainian military said Chasiv Yar, a city in Donetsk Oblast, remains one of Russia’s main targets because control of the area could facilitate further Russian advances toward the
Russian forces want to take control of Chasiv Yar before May 9, just in time for Victory Day celebrations in Russia.
`We are trying every possible way to prevent Russia’s plan to capture Chasiv Yar before May 9. But Russia currently has a 10-1 ratio in terms of artillery superiority and overall air superiority in the area.
Mr. Pavliuk hopes billions of dollars in new US military aid, which has been stalled for nearly 7 months, will have an impact on the Ukrainian battlefield.
`We will do everything possible to prevent Russia’s breakthrough and we hope American weapons will help us. If the weapons arrived in time, we would not have lost the territories that we
Mr. Pavliuk cited information from Ukrainian military intelligence that, in addition to completing control of the three provinces of Donetsk, Lugansk and Zaporizhzhia, Russian forces are still focused on controlling the regional centers of Kharkov and Sumy,
`But we don’t know how serious those plans are, nor whether they have the ability to carry out the plans with the forces they have at their disposal,` he said.
The Ukrainian commander also predicted that the number of Russian troops would increase this year as Russia’s summer offensive campaign is about to take place.
`We believe that Russia wants to mobilize an additional 100,000 troops and they will use these troops to reinforce their forces that were present in Ukraine in June and July,` Mr. Pavliuk said.
`By the end of this year, we think Russia intends to mobilize nearly 300,000 more soldiers. But they are also losing nearly 25,000 to 30,000 dead and wounded every month,` the Ukrainian commander added.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi said on April 28 that Ukrainian forces must retreat west from the villages of Berdychi, Semenivka and Novomykhaiivka in Donetsk province as Russian troops continue to advance into the area.
Russian forces broke through the line and gained a foothold in part of Ocheretyne, a front-line village nearly 10km from Berdychi and Semenivka.
Commander Syrskyi said that Russia is mobilizing up to 4 brigades (from 8,000 to 32,000 soldiers) to conduct offensive operations in the direction of the cities of Pokrovsk and Kurakhove west of Avdiivka, where Russia declared control in May.
