The International Criminal Court ordered the arrest of two Russian military commanders 0
(Dan Tri) – The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Lieutenant General Sergey Kobylash and Admiral Viktor Sokolov, accusing the two Russian military commanders of committing war crimes during the Ukraine conflict.
The ICC has issued arrest warrants for top Russian commanders Sergey Kobylash and Viktor Sokolov for alleged war crimes in Ukraine,
The International Criminal Court (ICC), headquartered in The Hague (Netherlands), on March 5 said there was a legal basis to believe that two Russian military commanders, including Lieutenant General Sergey Kobylash and Admiral Viktor
Lieutenant General Kobylash, 58, was the commander of the long-range aviation of the Russian air force at the time of the attacks.
According to the ICC, Mr. Sokolov, 61 years old, was an admiral in the Russian navy and commander of the Black Sea Fleet during the time of the attacks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the arrest warrant.
`Every Russian commander who orders an attack on Ukraine’s civilians and critical infrastructure must know that justice will be served. All those who commit such crimes must know that they will be held accountable.`
ICC prosecutor Karim Khan visited Ukraine last March to investigate Russia’s campaign of missile and drone attacks on power plants and other infrastructure, which killed hundreds of civilians.
The ICC has repeatedly taken steps against Russia amid the outbreak of conflict in Ukraine, most notably issuing an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin last spring.
The ICC issued an arrest warrant for President Putin and Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova on charges of `illegal deportation of children and illegal transfer of children from Ukrainian territory to Russia`.
Russia admitted taking thousands of children out of Ukraine, but affirmed that this was to protect orphans and children abandoned due to war.
This is not the first time the ICC has issued an arrest warrant for a serving head of state, but the agency has never made such a move against the leader of a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that, like many countries, Russia does not recognize the authority of the ICC and considers any declaration by the ICC to be legally invalid.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also affirmed that for Russia, the decisions of the ICC are meaningless.
