(Dan Tri) – Russian officials warned Finland about the scenario of new NATO membership allowing the military alliance to place nuclear weapons on its territory.

Russian Ambassador to Finland Pavel Kuznetsov on April 6 warned that Moscow would retaliate against the Nordic country if NATO nuclear weapons were placed on Finnish territory.
Finland is one of NATO’s newest members.
Ambassador Kuznetsov said that the relationship between Russia and Finland cannot return to the way it was before.
`Sooner or later, the relationship between the two neighboring countries will be restored. However, it will not happen as quickly as we want,` he said.
`Everything here will not depend so much on Helsinki, which has largely lost its independence in making foreign policy decisions, but on the general policy direction that the US and NATO are taking.
Mr. Kuznetsov also warned that Russia would respond if any NATO nuclear weapons were placed on Finnish territory.

Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized Finland’s decision to become a NATO member last month, calling its neighbor’s entry a `senseless step` that forced him to send weapons to the two countries’ border.
